Baseball really began to gain popularity in Japan during the post-World War II period, thanks to the American GI’s who promoted the sport heavily and the Japanese corporations that backed the teams as sponsors (and still do to this day).

Baseball was introduced in Japan before 1900. It has been the sport in Japan for ages now, and high school baseball there is a huge, huge deal. For example, there's been probably a trillion manga written about high school baseball players trying to lead their team to Koshien; it's such a part of the culture there that it has become cliché.
